expatriate information for Indonesia

There are a number of opportunities for expatriates to study gamelan instruments and play in various groups.

Pagoyuban Retno Budaya is an informal beginners group open to all, with or without prior gamelan or other musical background. It meets on Wednesday evenings in Pejaten Barat close to Kemang. The group meets at 7:00pm, has a light Indonesian dinner and chat and then plays until 9:00pm. Members are expatriate and Indonesian. The cost is Rp 100,000 per month. The teacher is Pak Parno from Seragam. For beginners who wish to progress to a somewhat more serious level, this group serves as a feeder to more advanced studies under the direction of Bapak Wakidi Dwidjomartono, a highly respected musician from Solo. For more information, contact cwalkerhawaii@yahoo.com.

PPIA – The Indonesian-American Friendship Association (PPIA) has a Javanese gamelan, now located at the Language School of LIA in Pancoran, which has been used in the past for beginner classes. Weekly classes will resume, taught by Pak Margono, if there is enough interest. Contact Vera by phone at 081-692-2714 or email her at djuliarsov@yahoo.com for more information.

JIS Academy, operated by the Jakarta International School, periodically offers introductory gamelan/wayang courses for adults co-taught by Kitsie Emerson (ekathryn@hotmail.com), a JIS teacher who has spent many years in intensive study of gamelan and wayang, and Bapak Wakidi Dwidjomartono, a highly respected musician from Solo. For dates and prices, consult the JIS website (www.jisedu.or.id).
