Gangga is the first of the Sangihe Islands that lie between Sulawesi and the Philippines. Of volcanic origin and covered with rainforest, they are surrounded by coral reefs and white beaches.

Tondano, the capital of the Minahasa district, a town near Lake Tondano, is renowned for its remnant of an active volcano, Mount Lokon. The local Minahasa people believe that they are descendants of Toar and Lumimuut, two legendary divinities in the Minahasa mythology.
