expatriate information for Indonesia

Padmanadi (Lotus Spring), a charming eatery that hasn't sacrificed service for size, has expanded in the last few years, doubling its seating capacity, testimony to its increasing popularity. One of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in Jakarta, it is also one of the biggest with seating for over 200. Spotlessly clean, and with tasteful décor, the restaurant has been a favorite of many vegetarians in Jakarta over the past 18 years. Catering mostly to the Buddhist crowd, the restaurant also sells vegetarian foodstuffs. Popular for weddings and other parties, this family-style restaurant can get a little “busy”, so if you are looking for a quiet night out, it is best to go on a weekday.

Padmanadi prides itself on its original recipes and takes care that the food is attractively presented. The well-groomed waiters are always willing to suggest items from the menu and are attentive without being intrusive.

Popular dishes include: Lohancai, Rp 25,000, (white mushroom, black wood-ear mushroom, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, veggie prawn and glass noodles in a delicately flavored pink sauce); Cumi Barbeque (calamari in barbeque sauce), Rp 30,000; Rendang (veggie meat and potatoes stewed in a spicy coconut milk sauce) Rp 22,000; Gohiong (Chinese sausage, made from rolled dried bean curd, with a delectable creamy filling using bengkuang), Rp 22,000; Lumpia, Rp 18,000 (fresh or fried spring rolls with a moist slightly sweet-tasting filling using French beans, bengkuang, carrot, and mushroom. Try also their Paikut Asam Manis, Rp 22,000, Tempura, Rp 30,000 and Sapo Haisien, Rp 30,000. Drinks are standard and like many other vegetarian restaurants there are no desserts on the menu.

Each of the above servings are enough for at least two people, so sharing is recommended. There are seating arrangements for two, four, six and eight people. Upstairs features more exclusive dining rooms that can be booked for groups.
