In the mid-1990s, the Indonesian Department of Education and Culture began to open opportunities for the development of what are termed national "plus" schools. These schools have become the creme de la creme of the Indonesian school system. Admission is open to expatriate children and some of these schools offer international curriculum and English as the medium of instruction. They are a great alternative to the more expensive international schools for expatriates whose companies will not cover the cost of education, as well as for the children of mixed Indonesian-expat marriages. The list is actually longer than what we've included here. We have only included the schools that have been recommended by expat parents. Enrollment in most Indonesian schools begins in April of each year for July admission.
