This is a service provided for the general community of Jakarta. The Staff Registry is open on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:30 noon and is staffed by volunteers. The Staff Registry assists expatriate households to hire cooks, babysitters, maids, guards (jaga) and gardeners. The Registry lists household staff who have worked for expats for at least one year. Folders are put out on each prospective household staff person who is present to be interviewed. In these folders you will find biographical information and recommendation letters. These letters have been verified and the KTP card (National I.D.) of each person is valid to work in Jakarta. If you need assistance with interviewing, there is usually a volunteer available who speaks Bahasa Indonesia. It is recommended that you discuss all the conditions of employment during your interview to minimize misunderstandings later. Discuss days and hours of work. Most staff employees expect one day off a week and work 12-hour days, which of course includes a lunch hour and periodic breaks. Discuss job responsibilities including the size of your home and family. If the staff member is living out, find out where they live in relation to your house. We recommend hiring for a probationary period of 1 to 3 months. During this time employment can be terminated by either party if it doesn't work out for whatever reason. It is also recommended that any staff handling food or working with young children be tested for hepatitis, tuberculosis and typhoid before beginning employment.
