About Jakarta Players
Jakarta Players is a non-profit community theatre organization. JP membership is open to anyone interested in theatre. The group is made of multi-national volunteers who are dedicated to providing English language entertainment to Jakarta’s theatre-loving community. Proceeds from the productions are donated to local Indonesian charities, mostly benefiting children.
Jakarta Players has been producing comedies, dramas, musical revues, murder mysteries, pantomimes, cabarets, dinner theatres, small and big shows, for over 40 years. In recent years JP has produced A Christmas Story, The Dining Room, The Collection, Black Comedy, I Do, I Do!, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Can’t Pay Won’t Pay, South Pacific, A Chorus of Disapproval, The Lion in Winter, Pizzazz!, Dead White Males, Bits about Love, Wyrd Sisters, Cosi, The Dancing Donkey, The Family Toth, A Tomb with a View, Buried Child, The King and I, Speaking in Tongues, Assorted Nuts 1, and Assorted Nuts 2.
Monthly "Drama Nights" are normally held on a Friday night each month in the Sunset Lounge of the American Embassy Recreation Association, located at Jl. Brawijaya IV No. 20, Kebayoran Baru. If you’re new to Jakarta Players and would like to come along to a Drama Night, please contact JP Communications (email address below) to confirm the date and time of the next event.
Shows are advertised via email and posters, which are placed in clubs, grocery stores, international organizations (ANZA House, AWA, JICC), companies, and international schools.
Membership in the Jakarta Players is open to children, teens and adults of all nationalities (expat and Indonesian!). There are currently over 300 members. Cost of membership is free!
Membership entitles a person to receive the monthly emailed newsletter and to come to the monthly drama night, where members can socialize or be entertained with theatre games and other fun activities. Most activities are conducted in English.
Newcomers to Jakarta are welcome to join the Jakarta Players. No theatre experience is necessary. Prospective members are invited to attend a JP Drama Night, where they can meet current members and join, or they can contact one of the officers listed below.
Members are encouraged, but not necessarily expected, to get involved in some way in JP activities. No experience is required to help with any of the productions. Many members choose to help backstage with sets, props, costumes, or hair and makeup. Experienced JP members train willing newcomers in the various roles necessary to make a production come alive on the stage. Members can choose learn the production side or the technical side, or audition for roles in upcoming productions.
The Jakarta Players would like to thank our wonderful sponsor, ASIAN TIGERS Mobility, for its continued support of our group.
