The YAKKUM Story

Yakkum craftsmenYAKKUM Craft is a non-profit organization located in Yogyakarta, Central Java. The aim of the organization is to provide income-earning opportunities to physically disabled young adults. YAKKUM Craft markets quality handicrafts made by growing teams of producers under the RehabCraft Label.

YAKKUM Craft was established in 1991 and is the sister organization of Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM, a rehabilitation center. Over the last few years many young adults with physical disabilities have attended vocational training courses run by Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM and learnt how to make handicrafts. At the conclusion of the training, those who achieve the required standard have become regular producers for YAKKUM Craft.

YAKKUM Craft currently has a total of 147 producers all with physical disabilities, 42 producers work on site and are paid a monthly wage; 105 producers work at home and are paid per item made. 56% of producers are men and 44% are women. Special benefits for producers include medical expenses, transportation allowance and accommodation allowance.

Yakkum craftsmenThe legal document, which established YAKKUM Craft, requires that 90% of the producers and 60% of the administrative staff must be disabled. In fact at present, 100% of the producers and 76% of the staff have physical disabilities.

Rehab Craft products

The range of handicrafts produced includes leather items, wooden items (wooden toys, jigsaw puzzles, wood turning and wood carvings), soft toys and paper tole (3-dimensional pictures).

Yakkum craftsmenThese high quality crafts have become well known among expatriates in Jakarta and Balikpapan and are looked upon favorably by both tourists and exporters alike. Our products are marketed in Indonesia through our shops in Bali and Yogyakarta and through other major outlets in Bali, Jakarta, and Bandung. Volunteer in the expatriate community also display our products at various women's organizations monthly meetings and bazaars in Jakarta and Balikpapan and at many pre-Christmas sales events. Over the last five years we have exported Rehab Craft products to Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

In Indonesia, it is almost impossible for disabled persons to gain employment in large factories, offices, etc. Opportunities for earning a living and becoming economically useful members of communities are extremely limited. Most disabled people have received only a limited education and few receive skills training. However, making handicrafts of high quality is well within the abilities of most physically disabled people.

Yakkum craftsmenYAKKUM Craft has developed a good reputation for its assistance to the handicapped in Indonesia and the sales of Rehab Craft products continue to grow.

Without the support and opportunities to earn a living provided by YAKKUM Craft, our producers would remain unemployed and liabilities on their families. Most physically disabled people are capable of working and living independently. All they need is the opportunity to acquire useful skills and the chance to use them to earn an income.

Based on 10 years of experience in production and marketing of handicrafts, YAKKUM Craft believes that the making of quality handicrafts for sale to foreign tourists, expatriates and for export has a tremendous potential for meaningful employment and money earning possibilities for disabled people in Indonesia.
