The YAKKUM Story
YAKKUM Craft was established in 1991 and is the sister organization of Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM, a rehabilitation center. Over the last few years many young adults with physical disabilities have attended vocational training courses run by Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM and learnt how to make handicrafts. At the conclusion of the training, those who achieve the required standard have become regular producers for YAKKUM Craft. YAKKUM Craft currently has a total of 147 producers all with physical disabilities, 42 producers work on site and are paid a monthly wage: 105 producers work at home and paid per item made. 56% of producers are men and 44% are women. Special benefits for producers include medical expenses, transportation allowance and accommodation allowance.
Rehab Craft productsThe range of handicrafts produced includes leather items, wooden items (wooden toys, jigsaw puzzles, wood turning and wood carvings), soft toys and paper tole (3-dimensional pictures).
In Indonesia, it is almost impossible for disabled persons to gain employment in large factories, offices, etc. Opportunities for earning a living and becoming economically useful members of communities are extremely limited. Most disabled people have received only a limited education and few receive skills training. However, making handicrafts of high quality is well within the abilities of most physically disabled people.
Without the support and opportunities to earn a living provided by YAKKUM Craft, our producers would remain unemployed and liabilities on their families. Most physically disabled people are capable of working and living independently. All they need is the opportunity to acquire useful skills and the chance to use them to earn an income. Based on 10 years experience in production and marketing of handicrafts, YAKKUM Craft believes that the making of quality handicrafts for sale to foreign tourists, expatriates and for export has a tremendous potential for meaningful employment and money earning possibilities for disabled people in Indonesia.
